April Saint of the Month
St. Catherine of Sienna

St. Catherine of Sienna

Saint of the Month:  St. Catherine of Siena was born in 1347 during a difficult time in the Church.  She received tremendous graces very early on and she dedicated her life to God when she was seven years old.  At the age of 16 she joined the Dominican order and lived a life of hidden prayer during which she had many mystical experiences and was shown visions of hell, purgatory, and heaven.  The Lord called Catherine to a public life and she was a major influence trying to renew the Church of the 14th century.  She was called upon by popes, bishops, and political leaders to work towards peace.  St. Catherine influenced Pope Gregory XI to return to Rome from France and to work toward reforming the clergy which brought much needed unity to the Church, but this peace did not last and at the end of St. Catherine’s life she again was trying to bring unity to the Church after a misunderstanding about who the true pope was.  St. Catherine died at the age of 33 and was declared a Saint and later a Doctor of the Church for her teachings and major contributions to the Church.

Virtue of the Month: Solidarity or Unity :  St. Catherine illustrates solidarity both in material and spiritual levels.  First in her love for the poor and destitute she constantly worked to help those in need.  Second she defended the unity of the Church even to the point of giving her life to stand up for the need for unity in the Church and its members.
